Partners In Health Brand Evolution

The Intersection of Design & Development

Opportunity

Partners In Health (PIH) is a global health and social justice nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality medical care to the poor in ten countries around the world.

As the lead designer on the Communications team, I spearheaded a strategic cross-site rebranding initiative to unify the ten field sites, commemorate PIH’s 25th anniversary, and create a cohesive look and feel that sets the organization apart from other nonprofit and health care institutions. As project lead, I facilitated conversations with project stakeholders around the world, developed and refined concepts, and implemented final design solutions. As the primary brand manager, I consulted on the website redesign and trained staff on how to use the new visual identity guidelines.

As is the case for many nonprofits, the budget for the rebranding initiative was quite limited. Not afraid to take an unconventional approach, I proposed that Partners In Health utilize internal design resources and hire a consultant, Korn Design, for project management and art direction. Though a bit unorthodox, this collaboration was incredibly successful and led to a rebranding process that truly epitomized Partners In Health’s values of accompaniment, commitment, innovation, and transformation.

Outcome

For the first time in 25 years, each of the Partner’s In Health sites has an identity in its own native language.

The hands in Partner’s In Health’s logo, synonymous with high-quality health care among staff, patients, partners, and supporters around the world, were redrawn to emulate the human core of PIH’s work. Set at an angle, they suggest an innovative, collaborative energy.

The square format of the symbol and clean sans serif font can be more easily replicated at field sites, where the logo is often hand-painted or applied in vinyl.

Partners In Health’s new visual system consists of vibrant colors inspired by the diverse cultures of its sites, clean and modern typography that includes a Cyrillic option, and photography that celebrates PIH’s work while respecting the dignity of its patients.

Partners In Health has a long-standing reputation of being a game-changer in global health. The new branding unifies the organization and enables PIH to better communicate and engage with its community of staff, patients, supporters, and partners.
